a team of researchers from University of Washington- supported mainly by grants from the National Science Foundation- plan to develop a software (with processing power great enough to support real-time, two-way video on cell phones that allow signing communication) that would help the deaf and hard-of-hearing making conversation on mobile phone.the project was called MobileASL (American Sign Language).
The main hindrance in archieving a system is low data-transmission rates on U.S. cellular networks and limited processing power on mobile devices which make visuals and sign impossible to follow. the team is working around this by increasing the bit rate around the face and hands, while slowing it down for the surroundings that do not matter too much.
(People are already able to use sign language effectively in Japan and Sweden because of higher bandwidth networks).

The MobileASL project is led by principal investigator Eve Riskin, a University of Washington professor of electrical engineering. Co-leaders include Information School professor Jacob Wobbrock and Richard Ladner, a longtime professor of Computer Science and Engineering.

In the first phase Mobile Broadband is available in the Suva to Nausori and Suva to Lami corridor. The next phase of the rollout will see mobile broadband service available from the Coral Coast to Ba along the Queens Highway.

Sagem Orga has announced a partnership with BlueSky Positioning to integrate A-GPS positioning technology on to conventional SIM cards. Sagem Orga and BlueSky Positioning's new approach incorporates a GPS receiver and a proprietary antenna into the SIM card, enabling mobile operators to deploy applications with no need for software or hardware changes.

The primary purpose of A-GPS SIM is to provide accurate positioning information of the phone to emergency services in case of an emergency call as required by E112 and E911 legislation in the EU and the U.S. respectively. In addition to this, it can support generic location-based services such as navigation, 'find a place or person' services, location-aware games, and many more.

Google Earth lets people virtually fly around a 3D view of the world made from satellite and aerial imagery mapped onto the planet's mountains and valleys. The iPhone version reproduces this core experience, downloading imagery from Google's servers as the perspective shifts and dotting the map with landmarks, photos, and other information.

Google Earth for iPhone has a small Webkit-based browser to show the specific information users click on, and the bare-bones browsing experience includes a link to the more fully featured Safari browser Apple builds into the iPhone. One handy trick: when you click the address of a business, the iPhone will intercept the command and show it on the Google Maps application so you can get directions.

dTunes offers an alternative method for playing media files on your iPhone.
What dTunes offers that the iPod player does not, is direct access to music ad video download sites. You can download music, video or even torrents directly to your iPhone.
Using dTunes is very simple, just search for the song or artist you wish to listen to and select the option you wish to download or stream to your iPhone. All your downloaded items are saved directly to your iPhone and displayed in the home screen. One drawback that we have noticed is the inability to load music directly to the dTunes library. Files are stored in the /var/mobile/Library/Downloads folder.

After downloading or streaming media to your iPhone you can play it via the media player within dTunes. One feature that we love about dTunes is the ability to play music in the background while doing other things such as reading email. The default music download site is Seeqpod.com, and for video it is tinytube.net. Torrents are downloaded through a sign up service called iTorrentReplay. dTunes also gives you the option to dim the screen while playing music with the press of a button, no more waiting for the screen to time out to save power. dTunes is currently ad funded, the ads however do not seem to get in the way.

But, Maya Gadzheva of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Law and ICT, at the Catholic University of Leuven, in Belgium, warns that we should take care of our privacy.
It is now possible to obtain the precise geographical location of any mobile phone user at any time, explains Gadzheva. However, she points out that with the advent of internet-capable devices and global positioning systems (GPS) the number and type of mobile devices that can reveal an individual's whereabouts is increasing rapidly. This will not necessarily be destructive, but it does require consideration in terms of the legal and societal implications.

Mobile phones 'worse than smoking': Neurosurgeon

Mobile phones could represent a public-health time bomb akin to asbestos or smoking, according to a study by neurosurgeon Dr Vini G Khurana.

During a 14-month-long study Khurana reviewed more than 100 studies on the effects of mobile-phone use in recent medical and scientific literature — in addition to press and internet coverage — and concluded "there is a significant and increasing body of evidence... for a link between mobile-phone usage and certain brain tumours".

The risk may be as great as a twofold to fourfold increase of developing a tumour on the same side of the head as the "preferred side" for mobile-phone use, the report warns.

It states: "There is a growing and statistically significant body of evidence reporting that brain tumours such as vestibular schwannoma (acoustic neuroma) and astrocytoma are associated with 'heavy' and 'prolonged' mobile-phone use, particularly on the same side as the 'preferred ear' for telephony.

"It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking, and directly concerns all of us, particularly the younger generation, including very young children."

iPhone appeals more to lower income

According to comScore, the fasting growing user base of the iPhone are people with lower income who are using the device in order to cut down on other internet and entertainment sources. ComScore found that 43 percent of iPhone owners make more that $100,000 a year, with the strongest growth in users being in the $25,000 and $50,000 range.

Between June and August 2008, iPhone owners in the lower income bracket jumped by 48 percent, increasing the figures to about 3 times as many as those making more than $100,000 a year. The iPhone user base, overall, has grown 21 percent. Mark Donovan of comScore said, “this data indicates that lower income mobile subscribers are increasingly turning to their mobile devices to access the Internet, e-mail and their music collections,” “Smartphones and the iPhone, in particular, are appealing to a new demographic and are satisfying demand for a single device for communication and entertainment, even as consumers weather the economy by cutting back on gadgets.”

China's CDMA Base Drops for 3rd Successive Month

The Chinese mobile market surged past the 600m mark in September to finish the month with 607.17m connections. Monthly net additions stood at 7.89m, a long way from the record high of 9.46m in February 2008 but an improvement on the September 2007 figure of 7.64m.
After a six-month run of 8m + net additions in the first half of 2008 – with an average monthly gain of almost 9m, moreover – none of the past three monthly figures has made it over the 8m mark. It is tempting to link this downturn with the state of the global economy, but in fact the principal factor is more specific. China Unicom agreed the sale of its CDMA network to China Telecom in June, and since then it has seen three successive monthly declines to its CDMA subscriber base as it turns its attention away from this side of the business. In September, there was a net loss of 0.63m CDMA customers, the largest yet seen.

Nokia today announced the top 10 developers of its Mobile Games Innovation Challenge. The winners, to be announced at an exclusive awards ceremony later this month, will take home a total prize value of EUR 70,000. The three most innovative game concepts will be offered Nokia Publishing pre-production contracts. In addition, the first winner will be awarded EUR 40,000, the second EUR 20,000, and the third EUR 10,000 to enable further development of the chosen concept. An independent panel of industry experts from across the globe has spent the past few weeks deliberating through over a hundred entries to come up with a shortlist of the most innovative mobile games concepts. Entries were judged on game innovation, fun, feasibility of execution, and market potential.

First 3G Network Launched in Laos

Lao Telecommunications says that it has launched the first 3G network in Laos - in the capital city, Vientiane. The company also plans to expand the network into the main cities during 2009.

The firm added in a statement that it aims to sign up some 30,000 subscribers before the end of this year, with a further 100,000 during next year. The company is currently the largest operator in the country, and figures from the Mobile World database notes that the firm ended the first half of this year with 760,000 subscribers - representing a market share of 67%.

I-Tel launch CDMA phones in Uganda

Competition in Uganda’s telecommunication industry is set to intensify with the entry in December of I-Tel Ltd, a CDMA mobile telecommunication network operator.

CDMA — code division for multiple access — technology offers cheaper call rates, enhanced call capacity and better quality than the GSM platform used in the country’s mobile telephony.

Officials promise call tariffs that can only be matched by land lines at the average cost of Ush200 ($0.12) or less per minute. The lowest tariff on the market currently is Ush249 ($0.15) per minute, charged by Warid Telecom.

“Our rates will be better and cheaper. Whatever you say, the costs of running CDMA are lower than any other technology network on the market regardless of interconnection fees charged,” said Ronald Kayemba, the company’s sales and marketing manager.

Although the company was initially frozen out of its preferred GSM option, its officials argue that the low costs of CDMA will bring in the numbers from the downmarket consumer segment, for whom affordability is a prime factor.

And yet, this is exactly what happens every time a bull elephant named Kimani in Kenya wants do “play” on some neighboring farms: he sends out a text message to rangers so that he can be stopped.

Of course, Kimani’s not doing it voluntarily. He’s able to send out text messages to rangers like Richard Lesowapir via a SIM card that’s kept inserted and activated in his collar. And with the help of a so-called “geofence” and Google Earth, Kimani is kept from doing harm to Kenya’s farms, which are a significant source of income for some.

Japanese talked on mobiles for 1.899 billion hours during last year

According to the report by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the total talk time on mobile phones in Japan was 1.899 billion hours, a 4.5 percent increase from the previous year. A recent government report on domestic telephone usage in Japan in fiscal 2007 has found that the total time of calls made from mobile phones surpassed that of calls made from fixed-line phones for the first time in history. The number of mobile phone subscriptions at the end of fiscal 2007 was 102.72 million, a 6.2 percent increase from the previous period, exceeding 100 million for the first time in a single fiscal year. Meanwhile, the number of fixed-line phone subscriptions was 51.23 million, approximately half the figure for mobile phones, marking a 7.1 decrease from the previous year.

In addition to the growing number of mobile phone subscriptions, the spread of free call services between users of the same carrier is likely to have boosted the use of mobile phones, the ministry's telecommunications bureau says.The total number of phone calls in fiscal 2007 was 117.1 billion, a 2.3 percent decrease from 2006, and the total talk time was 4.237 billion hours, a decrease of 2.1 percent

iPhone 3G coming to Latvia, Lithuania

Mobile provider TeliaSonera today announced that its subsidiaries will begin sales of the iPhone 3G in Latvia and Lithuania starting on September 26th.
before this, Estonia -the other pair of baltic country- has got the iPhone 3G in August.
TeliaSonera owns a share of Latvia’s largest mobile operator, Latvian Mobile Telephone (LMT), and also controls Omnitel, the largest telecommunications country in the Baltic region. Neither company has released details on the iPhone’s price or available service plans.

Chunghwa Telecom is considering introducing a smartphone, which uses the new Android platform, to the Taiwan market as soon as the end of 2008. the smartphone's name is G1 Smartphone.

The G1 smartphone was launched globally Tuesday by Google for carrier T-Mobile USA Inc. It is the first phone operating on the platform jointly developed by Google, Taiwan's HTC and others.

The platform gives mobile operators and device manufacturers significant freedom and flexibility to design products.

T-Mobile USA has said it will bring the device to users in the U.K. in November, and throughout Europe in the first quarter of 2009.

New virtual reality design system to create a virtual phone

Korea's state-run telecommunication laboratory has developed a new three-dimensional, virtual reality design system that can speed up production of future mobile phones.

The design and evaluation system created by Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) allows manufacturers to create a virtual phone that can be used to look at the overall design, colors for the casing, and movement of all parts.The system can also be used to quickly gauge consumer demand for mobile phone designs that can boost sales once actual products rolls off assembly lines. The evaluation system comes with a glove-sensor that can check and evaluate the ease of operations and placement of keypads. Such features reduce the time it takes to make actual phones by making corrections to design features that are not comfortable for users.

Checking for defects in designs before phones are made could reduce the time and risks involved in production, since immediate feedback can be incorporated during the design stage. At present, companies have to make a mock up phone that is put to the test to check for faults or inconveniences, a time consuming and costly process, especially since several mock up phones may have to be made.
